Before our worship service to the Lord begins, we take some time to welcome all our members and visitors, introduce ourselves, and update members on recent activities that have or will be undertaken by the congregation.  We identify needs any members of the congregation may have, especially those who are physically unable to attend or have ongoing health concerns.  We also take this time to identify opportunities for members to serve one another.  We solicit prayer request from our members and for any members who may be traveling to include safe travels to all our visitors.

As commended by Jesus in John 4:23-24 and by the Apostle Paul to the Corinthians in 1 Cor 14:15, we worship the Lord God in Spirit and in Truth (i.e., with all of our heart, mind and soul in full and complete harmony with the Holy Scriptures).  After the announcements, our Worship to the Lord begins with the opening prayer. Prayer is a core element of the Christian’s life…as it was in the life of Jesus. Much is said in the Bible regarding prayer and you can find some of these instances in James 1:5-8, Acts 4:24-31, Colossians 4:12, James 5:16-17, Matthew 21:22, John 14:13, Romans 1:8, Colossians 3:17, James 1:5-8, Matthew 6, and James 5:13-16. When visiting one of our worship services you will observe that we pray often.

Since we desire to worship the Lord God in Spirit and in Truth, we follow the pattern of the first century church do not use any musical instruments or clapping when singing praise to the Lord.  The songs we sing to the Lord consists of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19).  As with our prayers, we sing with the sprit and with the understanding (1 Cor 14:15).  The words used in our songs teach, admonish, and edify each other (Col 3:16Ephesians 5:19).  God has commanded the sincere praise of His people to come from the heart (Colossians 3:16).  Since the first century church of Christ sang a-cappella in the days of the apostles, the Vegas Drive church of Christ sings a cappella.

Like the Christians in the first century (Acts 20:7), each Sunday on the first day of every week, you will observe the congregation eating bread and drinking the fruit of the vine in memory of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:26-29). Lifting Christ is when Christians remember Jesus in quietude. We take this time to reflect what His life, death, and resurrection means to us. We empty our mind of worldy thoughts and focus only on His sacrifice.

Jesus and His disciples partook of the Passover supper in accordance with the Law of Moses, which required all leaven (yeast) to be removed from the house this meal was eaten in (Exodus 12:14-15).  We can read in our bibles the elements the Lord Jesus himself used when He instituted the Lords Supper, being unleavened bread and fruit of the vine (Matt 26:26-29Mark 14:22-25Luke 22:19-20).  Since this occurred as part of the Passover meal Jesus and His disciples were eating during the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Matt 26:17-21Mark 14:12-17Luke 22:7-15), we know that the bread eaten by Jesus and His disciples was unleavened bread.  Therefore, we also use unleavened bread for the Lord’s supper.  Likewise, these scriptures tell us what they drank, “the fruit of the vine”, not wine.  Therefore, we also use the fruit of the vine, grape juice, during the Lord’s supper.

The Biblical basis for offerings, is it enable the church to serve and do the work of God. In the scripture passage of 1 Corinthians 16:1-4, Paul tells the Corinthian Church to set aside funds collected from their assemblies for those who are destitute but are not members of their fellowship. It is from this passage that early Christians viewed giving as an integral part of their consecration to God. Giving from this motive and spirit is pleasing in God’s sight. As Paul writes in his second letter to the Corinthians 9:7, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

The early Christians were encouraged to go everywhere telling about Jesus. We continue to do that today and you will find preaching to be an integral part of the worship service. At each worship assembly a sermon will be presented from God’s Word. The goals of such lessons vary. For example, sometimes they are meant to encourage, other times they are specific teaching tools. Often they help motivate us as Christians to live in service to the Master.

Lewis Wells is our full time evangelist. We also have multiple members who are qualified to teach God’s Word. In contrast to what is often seen in religious organizations, these individuals do not carry the title of Pastor or Reverend. You will observe that they are not dressed in religious clothing that would call attention to their role. We refrain from such practice because the New Testament church did not do such; they identified the person proclaiming the message as simply a minister, evangelist or servant. His goal is to preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15), preach to every nation (Matthew 28:19), preach the gospel to the lost (Acts 5:42), and he should edify and exhort the church (2 Timothy 4:2, Ephesians 4:11 & 12). Many of these responsibilities apply to all Christians.

Paramount in every worship service is the opportunity for individuals to become a Christians. With that in mind, we teach what God requires us to do to become a Christian at all assemblies. In conjunction with this teaching, we invite individuals to become Christians each time we meet for worship. Scripture teaches that to become a Christian we must hear his Word (Rom. 10:13-17), believe that Christ is our savior (Mark 16:16), repent of our sins (Acts 17:30), confess His name (Matt. 10:32-33) and be baptized (Acts 2:38).

When you visit with us you may see someone respond to this invitation. They may want to change their life by becoming a Christian. Or, the respondent may be a Christian who has not been living for the Master and wishes forgiveness from God and the supporting prayers of members. You may also see a member respond who simply wants the members to pray for him or her.

At the end of every church service, there is a closing prayer. It is another opportunity we take to give thanks in unity and express our gratitude to Almighty God for his presence as we ask for His blessings. More love, peace, wisdom, guidance, protection, clear purpose, empower us to love and serve, and action with our prayer, thanksgiving for all that we accomplish, one in the Spirit, God’s grace be with us always providing the members with biblical inspiration to live out their faith journey after the service concludes. Our formal worship to the Lord God concludes at the completion of the closing prayer.
